Overdose Death Investigations
Course Description
Following the introduction of a prescription monitoring program and enforcement action on pill mills, Ohio faced an overwhelming battle against opioid addiction. At ground zero for illicit substance abuse in the midwest, law enforcement officers responded to overdose deaths daily, often several times each shift. A response to the opioid epidemic required pioneers in law enforcement to establish new methods that would locate the distributors of deadly supplies of heroin, fentanyl, and their related compounds. The opioid epidemic welcomed a new type of policing requiring the collaboration of private and public partnerships focused on bridging the gap from addiction to recovery.
This course is intended to prepare law enforcement officers for the investigation and prosecution of distributors responsible for fatal overdoses. Attendees will learn ways to generate proactive investigations and connect individuals struggling with addiction to community resources.
